For centuries it was an important stop on the trade route (the Silk Road) from Asia into Europe. Population (1999): 2,142,700. ==Geography== At coordinates {{coor dm|41|16|N|69|13|E|}}, the local time in Tashkent = Coordinated Universal Time|UTC/GMT +5 hours. ==Sights== Image:Historical museum Tashkent.jpg|thumb|250px|The Historical Museum in Tashkent Due to the destruction of many of its historical buildings after the Russian Revolution|1917 revolution and, later, to the strong earthquake in 1966, much of Tashkent's architecture|architectural heritage is now lost. Still in existence, however, is the 16th century Kukeldash Madrassa, which is currently being restored as a museum. It dates back to the reign of Abdullah Khan (1557-1598) and now is administered by the provincial Religious Board of Mawarannahr Muslim |Moslems. The building is currently being used as a mosque. During the 19th century Nikolai Romanov, a grandson of Nicholas I of Russia was banished to Tashkent and died and is buried there.
