Peak DistrictImage:Rock_Climbers_on_Stanage_Edge_large.jpg|right|thumb|200px|Rock climbers on Stanage Edge. The '''Peak District''' is an upland area in central and northern England, in the United Kingdom. Most of the area is now a List of national parks of England and Wales|national park. It is conventionally split into the northern Dark Peak, where most of the moorland is found, and the southern White Peak, where most of the population lives. == Geology == The White Peak is underlain with early Carboniferous limestone, which produces numerous caves. Under the Dark Peak lie shales and sandstones of the late Carboniferous millstone grit. == History == The Mass Trespass of Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District, was a landmark in the campaign for national parks and open access to moorland in Britain. The Peak District National Park became the United Kingdom's first national park on April 17, 1951. The first long-distance footpath in the United Kingdom was the Pennine Way, which starts from the village of Edale in the heart of the Peak District. == Geography == * Upper Derwent Valley|Derwent Valley == Activities == * Rock climbing in the Peak District * horse riding * walking * cycling * caving * windsports (like hang gliding and parascending) * Water sport (recreation)|water sports * Aircraft wrecks == Climbing Areas == Western Grit (Staffordshire, Kinder, Bleaklow, and the Chew Valley) * The Roaches * Hen Cloud * Ramshaw * Windgather * Castle Naze * Kinder * Shining Clough * Dovestones Edge * Ravenstones Eastern Grit (Derwent Valley, Sheffield, Derbyshire) * Rivelin * Stanage Edge|Stanage * Burbage * Millstone * Frogatt * Curbar * Birchen Edge|Birchen * Gardoms * Black Rocks Peak Limestone * Deep Dale * Chee Date * Raven Tor * Pic Tor * Wild Cat * High Tor == External links == *[http://www.lakedistrictdesktops.com/galleries/peakdistrict.html A gallery of free wallpaper-sized photographs of the Peak District in winter] *[http://www.peakdistrict.org/ The official website of the Peak District National Park Authority] *[http://www.earth-photography.com/Countries/England/PeakDistrict_photos.html Peak District pictures] *[http://chris.croome.net/photos/peakdistrict.html A large collection of photos of the Peak District that can be used to illustrate this site] *[http://www.thepeakdistrict.info/ Attractions, activities, geology and historical information on the Peak District] *[http://www.visitpeakdistrict.com Official tourism website] {{National_Parks_of_England_and_Wales}} Category:National parks of England and Wales Category:Geology of the United Kingdom Category:Derbyshire countryside Category:Mountains and hills of the Peak District|* de:Peak District Nationalpark nl:Peak District pl:Peak District First page | Prev | Next | Last page |
