Huddersfield is in Yorkshire in England. This article covers both the town of Huddersfield itself, but also the district around it including the Colne and Holme Valleys. Historically a textile town, the area is now in the process of re-inventing itself as a residential and tourist center.
==Understand==
Huddersfield was once a major textile center, specialising in the production of high quality worsted cloth. This 19th century legacy has left the landscape studded with empty stone mills, many of which are now being sand-blasted and repurposed as upmarket apartments for commuters on the trans-pennine corridor.
The town contrasts its industrial heritage with the savagely attractive scenery of the Pennine Hills, a boon as the woolen trade has given way to tourism as the area's main draw. This growth has been aided by the use of surrounding villages as the setting for several popular TV shows, including "Last of the Summer Wine" and "Where the Heart Is".
Bordered by Greater Manchester to the South-West and Leeds to the East, Huddersfield is a town enjoying a renaissance. Precariously balancing industry and tourism, this is an area that muddies the distinction between the urban and the rural.
