Portuguese phrasebook

Portuguese phrasebook'''Portuguese''' is a Romance language closely related to Spanish phrasebook|Spanish, and even more closely related to Galician phrasebook|Galician (in fact, many people consider that Galician and Portuguese are the same language). It is spoken mainly in Portugal and Brazil, with some differences in pronunciation, spelling, and use of pronouns. It is also spoken in Mozambique, Cape Verde, and the Azores. If you know Spanish, you can pick up Portuguese pretty fast. But there are enough different words that a Portuguese can say a fairly long sentence that means nothing to a Spaniard. ==Pronunciation Guide== Portuguese has nasal vowels and reduced vowels. If you don't reduce the vowels you will be understood and will sound like you're overenunciating. If you don't nasalize the vowels, you can easily be misunderstood: ''não'' means "not", while ''nau'' means "ship". The nasals are transcribed as "ng", but don't pronounce "ng" as a consonant. Brazilian and Luso pronunciation differ somewhat. We have made no attempt to be consistent in transcription. ===Vowels=== ; a : like f'''a'''ther ; ã : like dét'''en'''te ; e : like s'''e'''t, '''a'''bout, or s'''ay'''. Often dropped at ends of words in Portugal but not in Brazil. ; i : like mach'''i'''ne ; o : between s'''o'''rt and b'''oo'''k ; õ : like French s'''ont''' (say "song" and drop the final consonant) ; u : like s'''ou'''p or b'''oo'''k ===Consonants=== ; b : like 'b' in "bed" ; c : like 's' in "supper", 'k' in "kid" ; ç : like enfor'''ce'''able ; d : like 'd' in "dog" ; f : like 'ph' in "phone" ; g : like '''g'''ara'''g'''e ; h : silent ; j : like mira'''g'''e ; l : like 'l' in "love" ; m : like '''m'''other. Nasalizes the preceding vowel, and is dropped at the end of a word. ; n : like '''n'''ice. Nasalizes the preceding vowel and is silent when followed by a consonant. ; p : like 'p' in "pig" ; q : like uni'''q'''ue. ''Qu'' is usually followed by ''e'' or ''i'' as a way to get the ''k'' sound. ; r : rolled as in Spanish. In Rio de Janeiro|Carioca dialect, it is often unvoiced and sounds like '''h''' to newcomers. ; s : like hi'''ss''', ha'''z'''e, or (in Portugal|Luso dialect) '''s'''ure ; t : like 't' in "top". In Brazil, like pea'''ch'''y when followed by ''e'' or ''i''. ; v : like 'v' in "victory" ; x : like bo'''x''', e'''x'''amine, or '''sh'''oe ; z : like 'z' in "haze", or in Luso like mea'''s'''ure ===Common diphthongs=== ; am : same as ã ; ai : like b'''i'''ke ; ão : like p'''ou'''nd ; au : like p'''ou'''t ; ei : like s'''ay''' ; eu : like '''you''' ; oi : like b'''oy''' ; om : same as õ ; ou : as in '''ow'''n ===Common digraphs=== ; ch : like ma'''ch'''ine ; lh : like mi'''lli'''on ; nh : like ca'''ny'''on ==Phrase list== ===Basics=== ; Hello. : Bom dia.
