Russian phrasebook

Russian phrasebook'''Russian''' is a Slavic language spoken by 170 million people world-wide. Most people living in Russia use it as a first language, and many other people in Central Asia and other parts of the former Soviet Union know it as a second language. Russian has a fairly simple verb system - past, present, future - except for one thing: verbs come in pairs called ''perfective'' and ''imperfective'' and there's no simple rule telling which two go together. Nouns and adjectives have six cases and three genders. The pronoun ?? is the plural of ?? and is also used, as in French, for polite address to one person. One important note: the handwritten Russian alphabet looks much different than the printed alphabet. Russians never use the printed alphabet when writing by hand. ==Pronunciation guide== Consonants and vowels in Russian (and Slavic generally) are ''soft'' (palatalized) or ''hard''. Consonants are pronounced soft if followed by a soft vowel or the soft sign, else hard. Some consonants are always soft or always hard, regardless of the following vowel. ===Vowels=== ; a ah : like f'''a'''ther ; e yeh : like '''ye'''t ; ? yo : like '''yo'''re; always stressed, else it reverts to '''e''' ; ? ee : like s'''ee'''n ; o oh : like b'''oa'''t when stressed; when unstressed same as '''a''' ; ? oo : like cart'''oo'''n ; ? yi-RIH : say '''ee''' but move the tongue to the back of the mouth ; ? eh obb-or-OHT-nuh-yeh : like p'''e'''t ; ? yoo : like '''you''' ; ? yah : like '''Ja''' in German The vowels are listed in alphabetical order. Please notice that the vowels also occur in hard/soft pairs: a/?, ?/e, o/?, ?/?, y/?. Russian, like English, reduces unstressed vowels. When vowels are unstressed, they are often pronounced like sof'''a''' (if hard) or mo'''ie'''ty (if soft). There are occasional silent letters, but not nearly as many as in English. ===Consonants=== ; ? beh : like '''b'''oy ; ? veh : like e'''v'''er ; ? geh : like '''g'''o; sometimes like '''h'''ah; in the genitive ending ???/??? like a'''v'''oid (e.g. ???? ??? of this day) ; ? deh : like '''d'''o ; ? zheh : like mea'''s'''ure; always hard ; ? zeh : like '''z'''oo ; ? ee KRAHT-kuh-yeh : like bo'''y''' ; ? kah : like '''k'''eep ; ? ely : like '''l'''eak or '''l'''ook ; ? em : like see'''m''' ; ? en : like '''n'''ew or '''n'''oodle ; ? peh : like s'''p'''igot ; ? err : rolled as in Spanish ; ? ess : like '''s'''eem ; ? teh : like '''t'''une ; ? ef : like '''F'''rench ; ? khah : voiceless gargle (hard); between '''k'''eep and '''h'''eap (soft) ; ? tseh : like boo'''ts'''; always hard ; ? chah : like '''ch'''eap; always soft ; ? shah : like '''sh'''oe; always hard ; ? shchah : like fi'''sh'''ing or fi'''sh ch'''ips; always soft. Halfway between '''sh''' and '''ch'''. ===Signs=== These used to be vowels (pronounced like the unstressed vowels above), but aren't any more. They indicate whether the preceding consonant is hard or soft. ; ? TVYOR-dee znahk : hard sign (very rare in modern Russian) ; ? MYAHH-kee znahk : soft sign ==Phrase list== ===Basics=== ; Hello. : ????????????. (''ZDRAHST-vooy-tye'') (Considered bad luck to say this to the same person twice in one day.) ; Hello.
