Though Thanjavur town has very little to offer the tourist, in the outskirts of the town and in nearby towns and villages one can find ancient temples with some magnificent architecture. Most of these temples date back to the 14th Century and beyond. The idols in some of these temples are believed to have emerged by themselves (''Swayambu''). Each temple has a unique story behind it. ==Understand== Most often people who visit these temples come here because they were asked to perform these rituals by Saint Agastya (who lived during the time of the Gods!) in his palm leaf manuscripts. These manuscripts tell you your past (including your parents names!) etc and your future just by your thumb impression.
